Laketown Township,1873, Day by Day

27 Rained inthe night again and stormed the most of the day and snowed some, still snowingthis evening. went down to Heath's mill and worked on bolt chest all day.

 

28 Snowedsome in the night and by spells all day. went down to Heaths mill and workedall day on bolt chest. went downtown after I quit work. got some boots forSammy, some matches [?] and lamp chimney and came home in company with Mr.Tidd. Sen. [senior?] still snowing this evening.

 

29 Snowedabout seven inches last night and froze a little. snowed a little through theday. went down to Mr. Heaths mill and worked 3/4 day on bolt chest.clouds the most of the day, cloud this evening and freezing a little.

 

30 Snowed alittle in the night and snowed most of the day, went to Heaths mill and workedall day. had to work all alone. still storming this evening.

 

31 Snowedthe afterpart of night an froze some. snowed the most of the day, went down toMr. Heaths mill and worked in forenoon, then went to town and saw Mr. Heath,then went around town some and came home with Jno. McCIair and he brought somemeal up for me.

 

November

 

1 Thawingmost of the day and cloudy. went with McClair to the schoolhouse to fix thehouse some, then I went to McClairs and helped him get in his stalks, then hecame over and drawed some wood for me. looks some like better weather thisevening.

 

2. Clouds all day and rained most of the afternoon,snow most all gone in the fields, went to the schoolhouse with McClair, put upa stove, then went down to Mr. Bells to get a school order on their assets for$7.35 and came home. I went at night and dug a few potatoes.

3 Pleasant and cold all day. went toHeaths mill and worked 3/4 of day. Mr. Heath came up in the forenoonand went back to town. I got started home, met Jno. Goshorn with Heathswaterwheels and went back and helped him unload, there, then came home.

 

4 Pleasantand more warm today. cut a little wood in the morning, then went down to Heathsmill and worked all day. pleasant this evening. Jennie not back home yet.

 

5 Frozequite hard this morning and staid froze the most of the day. the ice staid inWallins pond most all day. pleasant all day, went down to Wallins tannery andworked all day on Heaths mill, a little warmer this morning and pleasant.

 

b Froze hardthis morning, pleasant and warm in the sun but cold and freezing in the shad.went dawn to heaths mill and worked all day, feel quite like ague thisafternoon. cold and pleasant this evening my wife almost sick abed, a littlebetter this evening.

 

7 Froze alittle last night, thawing today and cloudy most of the day and rained somejust at night. staid at home all day not feeling very well. cut a little woodand went out in the woods to see if I could find some squirrels but did notfine any but a red one.

 

8 Moderatetoday and cloudy all day and sprinkled and snowed a little in afternoon. cutand split some wood in forenoon. and went to town in afternoon. got some mealof Heath and two dollars cash. some paper and porous plasters and something atBrowns.

 

9 Cloudy allday and rather cold. drew an assessors bond and wrote a little to the statesuperintendent, then went over to McClairs, too the bond over to him, came homeand drew an order on our assessor of twenty five dollars for Susie Breuckmannour teacher. Sammy took it over to McClair.

 

10.  Felt very miserable all night, did not sleepmuch all night my bones ached so. Laid on the [?} most of the day with a terribleheadache. snowing some today but it thaws about as fast as it comes.

11 Not verycold and snowing all day. staid at home all day and made a ramrod for Burdett'srifle feeling a great deal better today. cut a little wood just at night.

 

12 Frozesome last night and snowed the most of the day. went down to Heath's mill andworked 3/4 of a day. did not feel very well in the forenoon, but felt better inthe afternoon. still snowing this evening.

 

13 Snowedmost of the night, snow about 14 inches deep this morning. staid at home inforenoon and got our cooking stove in the house went and worked on Heath's millin afternoon. snowing a little this evening.

 

14 A littlecolder today and not snowing much, but cloudy most all day. went down toHeath's mill and worked a1 day. engaged a Qr of beef of Mr, Tedmon,

 

15 Warm andpleasant all day and snow going very fast with south wind. went to Heaths milland worked 3/4 a day after cutting a little wood in the morning, hadmy beef weighed after I quit work. Tedmon is to bring it to me if his horsegets back in time.

 

16 Stillthawing this morning. Mr. Tedmon brought me my beef this morning. cloudy allday and thawing. staid at home all day and no one here but Mr. Tedmon. cloudyand thawing this evening.

 

17 Warm andcloudy all day and sprinkled in the forenoon. cut a little wood in the morning,then went down to Heaths mill and worked all day. Froze a little last night butthawing all day. cloudy and warm this evening.

 

18 Rained some in the night and in themorning then snowed the rest of the day. staid at home all day and cut somewood to draw up and some at the door expected McClair here to draw some wood,but he did not come.

19 Snowedand blowed in the night and some through the day and in the evening. Went downto Heath's mill and worked all day. it is very bad traveling.

 

20 Snowed alittle last night but not much today, but cold. went down to Heaths mill andworked all day. sun set clear this evening. Barber brought me up some sugar andraisins and I brought them home at night.

 

21 A littlewarmer today and a few flurries of snow, went down to Heaths mill and workedall day.

 

22 Frozesome last night but thawing through the day. cut some wood in the morning thenwent to Heaths mill and worked all day. clear and freezing this evening,braided Hattie's hair in the evening,

 

23 Not verycold but snowing some. staid at home all day. filed and set my saw, then sawedsome wood. John McClair came here just at night to let me know that he wasgoing to butcher tomorrow.

 

24 Snowedsome in the night and most of the afternoon. McClair came over with his teamand took my hog over to his house. my wife and Iwent over. I helped him kill his hog and mine. he took his team and us back andmy hog. still snowing this evening.

 

25 Did notsnow much last night or today, went down to Heaths mill and worked all day,brought some feed home at night and some shoe grease.

 

26 Moderate and snowing by spells all day. went toHeaths mill and worked all day. came home at night with a dutchman and hebrought me a bag of feed and flour. cut up and salted my hog in the evening.

27 Snowedand thawed in the night and blew very hard. pleasant most of the day. went toHeaths mill and worked all day. freezing some this evening.

 

28 More coldtoday but not storming, went down to Heaths mill and worked all day. cloudymost of the day.

 

29 A littlewarmer today went down to Heaths mill and worked all day. went down to H. D. Mooresand engaged to move into his house and board him and his head man, then went toBurns and the post office and came home on foot.

 

30 Cloudyall day not very cold and not storming. staid at home all day. cut a littlewood in the morning. McClair here in forenoon and bought my boys and her home.Burdette. Miss McLeelan and Clare's little girls here just at night. H. D.Moore here just before night.

 

December

 

1 Rathercold and a little snow then a little misty and raining in the evening. Goshornand Wells came up and moved me down to Mr. Moore's boarding house.

 

2 Rainedmost of the night and by spells through the day. Fixed hay pen in the morning,then put away some things and took care of my wheat. went up town in afternoonand got some stovepipe fixed and came home. Mrs. Titus here this afternoon.

 

3 Rainedmost of the night and most of the afternoon. got Moore's horse and buckboard and Sammy and Iwent up where we lived and got our hens and brought then down home. Moore and Iweighed out 2226 lbs stone out for me.

 

4 Blowed hard the most of the night and snowed some,blowed hard all day from S. W. and W. and snowed some through the day, went upto Heaths mill and worked 3l4 of day. still blowing hard in the evening.

5 Not sowindy and not snowing, but quite cold. went to Heath's mill and worked 3/4of day. went up to Heaths in the evening and got a bushel and half of potatosand two cabbages, went to Taylor and Barbers and got a lamp chimney and 1 Galof Kerosine.

 

6 More mild andpleasant today. went up to Heaths mill and worked all day. found Mrs. WalterTitus here when I came home. she staid in the evening and Fred came after her.

 

7 A littlewarmer today. snowed a little last night. staid at home all day. George Smalleyhere in forenoon. McClairs children here and went to Sunday school. LizzyNewnham and Miss Ainsley here in the evening.

 

8 Rainedsome in the night, misty and rainy most of the day. went up to Heaths mill andworked all day. foggy and misty this evening. went up town in the evening andgot some school books for Sammy and some spoons.

 

9 Thawingall night and most of the day until just at night. cloudy most all day. went upto Heaths mill and worked all day on bolt chest. staid at home all the eveningwith Mr. Moore in his room. McClair came down to the mill to see me. Mr. Heathand I signed his bail bond as assessor to the district.

 

10 Froze alittle last night and most of the day thawing a little in the afternoon. went upto Heaths mill and worked all day on bolt chest. raining a little this evening.

 

1 1 Thawingall night and all day with a little rain last night. went up to Heaths mill andworked all day on bolt. moderate and cloudy

12 Lowry allday and thawing. went to Heaths mill and worked all day, still lowry thisevening. staid at home all the evening.

 

13 Froze and snowed some in the nightand some in the morning. went up to Heaths mill and worked all day. thawingsome through the day. staid at home all the evening.

14 Pleasantand moderate, staid at home all day. Burdett came here and took dinner with us.Almira Pratt here in the afternoon.

 

15 Warm andpleasant all day. went up to Heaths mill and worked all day. Mrs. Wait Thushere again to supper again.

 

16  Froze some last night. Warm and pleasant allday. went up to Mr. Heaths mill and worked all day, clear and pleasant thisevening and freezing some.

 

17 A littlefrosty this morning, clear and pleasant all day. went to Heaths mill and workedall day. clear and pleasant this evening.

 

18 Cloudyand moderate all day. went up to Heaths mill and worked all day. still cloudyand looks some like snow.

 

19 Cloudyand a little more cold and snowing a little. went up to Heath's mill and workedall day. cold and wintry this evening. Wm Bradley here this evening.

 

20 Frozequite hard last night and freezing all day and cloudy. went up to Heaths milland worked all day. Mr. Moreland came here this evening and got an elbow thatbelonged to a stove I let him have.

 

21 Cold andcloudy with a few flurries of snow through the day. Staid at home all day, noone here.

 

22 Cold andpleasant most of the day and this evening went up to Heaths mill and worked allday. Alfred Wallin was drowned in Goshorn lake this forenoon, went up town inthe evening and took some paper rags and old boiler.

 

23 Frozelast night and frost this morning. warm and pleasant all day. went up to Heathsmill and worked all day, rode home with old Mr. Bird. Mr. Moore in our roomthis evening.

24 Quitewarm today cloudy most of the day with a few flurries of snow about noon and inthe evening, went to Mr. Heaths mills and worked all day. went up towards theevening to get some oysters, did not get any. Burdett here after Jennie inevening.

 

25 Stillmoderate and cloudy most of the day and snowing a little in the evening went upto Heaths mill and worked 3/4 of a day. went up town in the evening.

 

26 Snowed alittle in the night and some through the day. went up to Heaths mill and workedall day. went up to Burns, the drug store, P.O. and Heaths. got some apples andcabbage at Heaths.

 

27 Snowed alittle last night, went up to Heath's mill and worked all day and got through,went up town in the evening to the drug store, Goshorn's shoe shop, the P.O.and home. a little colder this evening.

 

28 Not verycold but quite windy. staid at home all day.. George McClair and J. Myers heretoday. Had Dibble here in the evening.

 

29 More coldtoday and snowing by spells all day with hard N. East wind. staid at home allday. Made same soap and tinkered around the house some.

 

30 Cold andpleasant all day worked around the house some and went up town in the forenoonand in the evening got some oysters, crackers and flour at Taylor & Barbersand paid Goshorn for fixing my boots.

 

31 Not verycold today, staid at home all day and made some soap and tinkered around someand made a drill to make a key. John McClair here just at night. Mrs. Granthere just at night.
