Laketown Township, 1873, Day by Day

[August] 25 Cloudy the most of the day and a few sprinkles, a few dropsin the forenoon. went to the tannery and shingled on Heath's mill all day.cloudy this evening and looks some like rain.

 

26 Cloudy most of the day and cooler in the afternoon. Sprinkled somein the afternoon and evening, went to Heaths mill and shingled on the mill allday.

 

27 Cloudyin the morning andlooks some like rain. went in the morning and put up school meeting notices,then went and took the census of the school district and found 28 childrenbetween the age of 5 and 20 did not work today.

 

28 Warm and pleasant all day went to Heath; mill and worked all day.Mr. Heath was up) in the forenoon a while. Sammy went to town today.

 

29 Hog and pleasant all day. Went to Heaths mill and worked all day.got a ride home part of the way, got two bunches of onions of the :man I rodewith.

 

30 Hog: and quite a breeze. Went to the tanner; and worked all day onjointing floor plank. sprinkled a little just at night and in the evening.

 

31 Rained most of the night, waxen and pleasant all day, went toMcClairs and got some corn and potatoes. Mrs. Titus and Fred came up andbrought Hattie and Jennie home from Sunday school.

 

September

 

1 Cool and pleasantall day, went to the tannery and worked all day for Heath on his mill floor,went to school meeting in the evening and elected officers and raised money tocarry on the school for nine months.

2 Somewhat cool but pleasant all day, went down to the tannery and laidfloors all day in Heath's mill, Worked all alone. John Aliber came in theafternoon, got his tools and went home. cool and pleasant this evening.

 

3 Warm and rain in the middle of the day. went to the tannery andworked all day for Heath laying floor in the mill. went to town in the evening,saw Mr. Heath there, then went and hired Susie Breuckman to teach our school.

 

4 Warm and pleasant most of the day with N. W. wind. went to thetannery and worked all day for Heath, I went down town in the forenoon, to seehim (Mr. Heath) got five dollars of Clarence Heath, paid Mrs. Tidd two dollarsfor milk.

 

5 Quite cool and pleasant all day, went to the tannery and worked allday for Heath laying floor and at ceiling the mill. Heath sent me up a bag ofmeal. I got Zwemer's boy to bring it home for me, cold this evening andpleasant.

 

b Quite cool and cloudy most of the day, went down to Heaths mill andworked all day at ceiling &c. on his mill, quite cold this evening.

 

? Cold and pleasant most of the day, stayed at homemost of the day, went over to McClairs and Mr. Doanes. George Smalley, Wm.Flanner and Ed Tedmon here this afternoon. Tedmon staid til evening, then wentto Saugatuck.

 

8 Cold this morning but no frost here. Mr. Abby saysthere was frost downtown, went to Heath's mill and worked all day, went to townin the morning to get some nails for the mill use. Cool this evening.

 

9 A little more warm today and pleasant, went to Heaths mill and workedon ceiling all day.

 

10Quite warm today and pleasant. worked all day for G. P. Heath on ceiling, wentdown town at night to see Heath about work, got an {?} of him for twentydollars. went to the P.O. and got my Tribune.

 

11 Warm and pleasant all day, went down to Heath, newgrist mill and worked all day at matching ceiling. Cal Heath carne up to themill in the morning. went over to McClairs in the evening to find Sammy, but hegot home before I did.

 

12 Warm and cloudy this morning, commenced raining about middle offorenoon and rained most of the rest of the day. went to Heaths new mill andworked all day on bolt chest ceiling, wind N.W. and getting colder thisevening.

 

13 Cold wind all day, pleasant most of the day, went over to theschoolhouse and fixed the doer and lathed a place to plaster for a blackboard,went down to Heaths mill to help Dick Roach put a bold [reel? rod?] in the milland show him some lumber to take to town.

 

14 A light frost this morning, cold wind all day. Pleasant most of theday, my wife and I went over to McClairs in the afternoon, found VI sick. Mrs.,Titus and Fred came up with Jennie from Sunday school and took supper with uscold this day.

 

15 Cold wind this morning from the S.W. Susie Breuckman came up thismorning and commenced school. I went to town saw Mr. Heath ;end came home, wentto McClairs in afternoon and cut up my corn there, put the tops on McClairs haystacks.

 

16 More warm today and pleasant, went down to Heaths mill and workedhalf a day, Mr. Diane brought me some apples and I carne home with him.

 

17 Raved in the nightand most of the day, went over to Doanes in the morning, got some capers, thenwent to McClairs and home, filed my saw and cut some wood in the afternoon,cloudy this evening.

18 Warm 'til towards night, then it begins to growcold and sprinkled some, went down to Heath's mill and worked all day. McClairs folks- sent over to havemy wife and I go over there and sit up with the sick. I am most sick myself, somy wife went.

 

19 Rather cold today but pleasant, went to Heath'snew mill in the morning, then to Saugatuck to see Mr. Heath, went to his old mill to seehis old bolt chest. got 11/2 bushels of apples, got some potash atBurns, came to new mill and worked in afternoon. Burns brought apples to mill,Brink brought them home.

 

20 A little warmer today, went in the morning and saw Mr. Pains aboutthe schoolhouse lot, then went to Graffschap, took my school report to theTownclerk and to the supervisor, then went and saw Dr. Mouting, got somemedicine for my wife and myself.

 

21 Warns and pleasant all day with frost this morning., took mymedicine all night and until 10 A.M., then went over to McClairs. the folks area little better. came home and got some cornmeal, took it to McClairs and staidto dinner.

 

22 Rained some in the night and this morning staid at home all day, notfeeling well enough to work. Susie Breuckman came here this morning and signedher contract, my wife over to McClairs yet, have not heard from them today.

 

23 Rather warm today, staid at home all day and cut a little wood, mywife came home in the afternoon and staid about an hour, then went back toMcClairs to stay tonight, the folks are a little better

 

24 Cloudy most of theday and raining in the evening, went to McClairs to fix some fence but he hadno rails. I took his horse and wagon and went to town and got some things forMcClair and some cornmeal for him and for myself, got home about noon, wind.

25 Cloudy in the morning and looked like rain but it did not.pleasant most of the day, went down to the tannery and worked all day onHeath's mill. clear and cold this evening. think we will have a frost.

 

26 Cool this morning but quite warm through the day with hard southwind. went down to Heath's new mill and worked all day. warm and windy thisevening. Jennie went to town with Susie Breuckmann our teacher.

 

21 Very warm all day with a few short showers inforenoon. went out in Stimsons lot and Cut some wood in forenoon. Sammy wentand got McClairs oxen and drawed it to the house and cut a little. My wife andHattie went to see Mrs. Tidd. Mr. McClair & children here in afternoon.

 

28 Quite warm today and raining most of theafternoon. Staid at home all day. McClair came to go to Sunday school, itcommenced raining and they [stayed?] home.

 

29 Cooler toward morning rained most of the night. cloudy most of theday. went down to Heath's new mill and worked all day.Quite cool this evening, it was cool all day.

 

34 Cool and pleasant all day. went down to Heath's new mill and workedin the forenoon. went to town in the afternoon, got my Tribune and somesulphur. came home a little before night.

 

October

 

1 Pleasant today but rather cool staid at home in the forenoon, wentover to McClairs and dug a few potatoes in the afternoon my wife went Tidds in the morning and staidall day. Mrs. Minty's babe died this morning.

 

2 Warm and pleasantall day went over to McClairs in the morning, got his horse and buckboard andwent to town. got a chair and table at Birds, some strings at Burns & co. andbrought Jennie home.

3 Warm and cloudy most of the day and raining some in the afternoon andin the evening. staid at home all day. filed my saw and sawed some wood andsplit some of it. the teacher came here in the afternoon and went home withFred Taylor.

 

4 Rained most of the night and in the morning. went over to McClairsand got his horse and wagon and went to the funeral of William Minters littlechild at Mr. Tidds. then took Mr. Taylor, the rector to Saugatuck. got McClairsand my mail and took the horse home.

 

5 Cloudy most of the day and shined some in the afternoon. went over tothe schoolhouse and put up a clock shelf and finished lashing the black board.

 

b Quite cool and cloudy most of the day. went down to Heath's new milland worked all day. The [teacher?] came here this morning and is boarding herethis week. cold this evening looks some like snow just at night.

 

7 Cold this morning with frost and ice. went down to Heath's new milland worked 1/Z day. went to town in afternoon to see Heath. Saw Mr.Dunn got an order on the school assessor for money went and got it and paid forour school clock. pleasant all day, pleasant this evening.

 

8 A little warmer today and pleasant. went down to Heaths and worked alday, went down town after I got through work. rode home with Capt. Lauren inthe evening, cold and pleasant this evening.

 

9 Frost this morning, but warm and pleasant all day.went to Heaths new mill and worked all day, pleasant and more warm thisevening.

 

10 Warm and pleasant all day, went to McClairs in themorning to get his team to draw my timber but he wanted me to take his horseand go to mill for him. So I went, came back, got some mastic[? or morter] ofSimon (Olson and took to the schoolhouse to make a black board. went over afterschool and plastered it. Pleasant this evening.

 

11 Sprinkled a little this morning but had anotherIndian summer day rather warm. Went down to Heath's new mill and worked all day on bolt chest.

 

12 Somewhat cool all day, went over to theschoolhouse then came home my folks and went over at McClairs towards night. Idug some potatoes and brought home when we came home.

 

13 Quite cool this morning with S. E. wind and hooks like rain, getswarmer through the day. went down to Heath's mill and worked all day. Mr. Heathwas up to the mill this morning. hard wind this evening.

 

14 Frost this morning but warm through the day. Gwent down to Heath'snew mill and worked all day. worked in the water all the day. Mr. Heath was atthe mill most of the day.

 

15 Frost this morning. warm and pleasant all day. Gwent to Heath's newmill and worked all day, warm and pleasant this evening.

 

16 Red and warm this morning, commenced raining about10 A.M. and rained most of the rest of the day. went down to Heath's mill andworked all day. misty this evening.

 

17 Misty most of the day, went down to Heath's milland worked all day on flume. raining this evening.

 

18Cold and windy all day and cloudy most of the day. went down to Heath's milland worked 3/4 of day on mill flume. rode to Zwemer's corner with WmFlanner [?] when I came home. sawed and split some wood at night.

19 Pleasant and cold most of the day. staid at homeall day. went out in the evening and got a few beechnuts. pleasant and coolthis evening.

 

20 Cold this morning, frost and froze. wind blew cold all day. went toHeath's null and worked all day. Grant came and worked all day. Susie theteacher here this evening,

 

21 Cold N. wind this morning and most of the day changed to N. W. inafternoon. rained most of the day and still raining this evening. went down toHeath's mill and worked all day on bolt, sawed a little wood this evening.

 

22 Fair and pleasant all day, rained most of the night and froze alittle this morning. went down to Heath's mill and worked all day. Jennie andHattie gone to town with Susie the teacher, this evening.

 

23 Rained most of the night, cold and pleasant mostof the day. went down to Heath's mill and worked all day. clear, cold andpleasant this evening. Susie here this evening. Jennie and Hattie not back yet.Mr. Horace Moore came to see me this afternoon.

 

24 Cole this morning with S. W. wind, rather warm through the day. wentdown to Heath's mill & worked all day. Hattie came back this afternoonwhere I was at -work and came home with me at night.

 

25 Pleasant and cool all day, went down to Heath's mill and worked allday on bolt chest. Clear, pleasant and cool this evening. Jennie not back homeyet. John Tidd came here this evening to borrow my gun.

 

26 Rained the latter part of the night and most all day and in theevening. Staid at home all day. No one here but Almira Pratt's little girl whostaid all night and went away about noon. Jennie not home yet.
