Laketown Township, 1873, Day by Day

27 Warm night and warm today, had a heavy shower in the forenoon. Wentover to McClairs in the afternoon and went through my potatoes and put somepans green on them. Went and saw Mr. Doan and came home. Quite warm thisevening.

 

28 Warm and pleasant all day, went over to McClairs and hoed potatoesand corn all day. Sammy went over and staid with me all day. Jennie came homewith Burdett this evening.

 

29 Warm and showers today. McClairs folk over here at supper today.Cloudy this evening.

 

30 Warm and lowry in forenoon. went to Mr. Griners in the morning and gotsome soap, then went to McClairs and finished hoeing my corn in forenoon,helped John McClair how his corn and grind his scythes then we went to mowing.til night, a little cooler this evening.

 

July

1 Warm and pleasant in the forenoon. clodued up and rained about 4 P.M.and rained all the evening. Worked 3/4 day in helping theteacher here this evening. a little cooler this evening.

 

2. Warm and rainy part of the day. Did not do anything in the forenoon.went to town in afternoon with McClair. Got five dollars of Moore, and V2 bushel of potatoes, tea and coffee. Paid mypostage. got a new knife at Nies.' [later hardware store owner JohnKoning, was an apprentice to John Nies]

 

3 Warm and cloudy in forenoon and raining afternoon, went to McClairsand got his team and plow & dray, plowed and sowed some buckwheat anddragged it in. took his team home and got dinner at his house. came home, cut alittle grass. Chloe went to town with Mrs. McClair and back this A.M.

4 A little cooler and some rain through the day. McClair came over withhorse and wagon and we went to his house and to dinner and spent the most ofthe day. A little cool this evening and somewhat hazy.

 

5 Cool north wind and pleasant all day. went to McClairs and worked allday at haying and fence. came home and got a little hay. I had cut in the barn.quite cool this evening. worked 21/4 days for McClair athaying, hoeing and on fence this week.

 

d Cool and pleasant all day. McClair came over here with his horse andwagon and we went down to Capt. Larsons and staid a while then we came home.Mr. and Mrs. Zwemer here just at night to make a call. Quite cool this evening.

 

7 Cool and cloudy in the morning, cool wind most of the day. sunshinemost of the forenoon. went to McClairs and worked at mowing al day, clouded upin afternoon and rained some in the evening.

It is unclear exactly where J.B. Smalley, who kept this diary, lived but it was on the south edge of Laketown Township. This map shows the farms ofMcClair, Doane, Tidd and Zwemer, neighbors he frequently mentions in his diary.

 

8 Pleasant with cold wind all day. went to McClairs and worked athaying all day. worked until 9 o'clock at night.

 

9 More warm today and cloudy most of the day. went to McClairs andfixed his wagon tongue, then we stacked hay the rest of the day, got up onestack. sprinkled a little this evening.

 

10 Cloudy in the morning and rained a little about daylight. went toMcClairs and worked all day haying. then we ground a cradle scythe and I camehome. John Zwemer here this evening, quite cool this evening,

 

11 Pleasant with cool wind all day, went to McClairs and worked all dayin haying. rode home with him at night.

 

12 Pleasant with strong S. E. wind. went to McClairs and stacked hay 314of day, rode home with him at night and when he went to town Sammy went downwith him, did not get my paper. Worked $ 3/4 days at haying for McClair and 13/4 dayslast spring.

 

13 Very hot all day with some signs of rain in the afternoon, with somethunder. staid in the house the most of the day. went out and picked a fewberries for supper. Miss Lizzie Newnham and Joseph Ainsley up here just atnight.

 

14 Rained some in the night and hot today. went over to Mcclairs andhoed some in the forenoon. cut wheat in the afternoon. some thunder in theevening and some rain towards midnight.

 

15 Rained some in the night. very hot all day, clouded up towards nightand looks like rain, went to McClairs and worked in wheat the most of the day.

 

16 Very hot all day. some thunder showers passed around us at noon, avery few sprinkles of rain here. Worked iii about 3 P. M. in wheat then went totown with McClair. Got some meat at Heath's and

some sugar, meat and peas at Brinks. Still hot this evening.

 

17 The sun shines very hot part of the day, but we had a strong S.W.wind all day. went to McClairs and worked most of the day in his wheat. Cut alittle of our company wheat after supper, a little cooler this evening.

 

18 Pleasant all day with strong S. W. wind went to McClairs and workedin his and my wheat in forenoon, and in his in afternoon until about 4 o'clockGetting quite cool this evening. finished cutting his wheat and our companywheat this afternoon.

 

19 Quite warm today and pleasant most of the day. cut a little wood andpicked a few berries. had a little shower towards night.

 

20 Quite cool but pleasant all day, staid at home all day. McClairsfolks over here to supper. Jennie and Sammy went to Saugatuck at Sunday School.

 

21 Quite cold this morning, most cold enough for frost. went over toMcClairs. We set out the wheat. then stacked the most if it. My thumb quitesore tonight. I don't know what gets it. quite cool this evening. Mr. Crousecalled here this evening enquiring for Mr. Tidds.

 

22 Warm and pleasant all day. staid at home all day, did not doanything. my thumb is so bad. I am afraid I am going to have [??] on it.

 

23 Hot and pleasant all day. stayed at home all day, Hattie and I wentout and picked a few berries in the morning, Jennie and Sammy went over towardsthe bayou to get some berries, did not get many. very warm this evening

 

24 Hot and pleasant all day, went to town in the morning. Settled withH. D. Moore and got my money paid. J. Burns & Co. and A. H. Brink & cogot some dried beef and came home. stopped where Geo. P. Heath was

working at his mill and agreed to go to work for him tomorrow.

 

2 5 Went down to the tannery and worked for Geo. P. Heath all day. Myhand pained me very much, very warm and close a11 day. [The new Heathmill, which might have been both a saw and a grist operation, was built nearthe Wallin tannery.]

 

26 Still warm and pleasant and no rain. went down to the tannery andtook care of my tools, then came home. My thumb is so bad I thought I could notwork. The boil broke towards noon.

 

27 Still hot and dry. My wife and I went over to McClairs about noonand staid to dinner. came home about 6 P.M. our children went to Sunday school,got back after sundown.

 

28 Still hot and dry intended going to work for Heath but my hand wasnot well enough though it is getting some better I think. did not do anythingbut a few chores and recd some thunder this evening and some appearance ofrain.

 

29 Still hot dry and pleasant, went down to the tannery and worked a11day for Geo. P. Heath on saw frame, thumb sore today.

 

30 Still continues hot and dry, went down to the tannery and worked allday for Heath on saw frame. took some corn with me to get Heath to grind. alittle cloudy this evening and looks a little like rain.

 

3 I Rained a little just before daylight and the most of the day. wentdown to the tannery and worked all day on saw frame. cloudy yet this evening.Ed Tedman and father here this evening. Jennie's gong to the circus with Ed.

 

August

 

1 Hot and pleasant most of the day, clouded up just as night and rainedsome with thunder. went to the tannery and worked all

day for G. P. Heath on saw frame. Rode part of the way home with JohnLucas' boy & team.

 

2 Rained some in the night but pleasant most of the day, went to thetannery and worked all day for Heath on saw frame. Mr. Heath brought me up asack of flour. Ed Tedman came here this evening.

 

3 More cool today and pleasant most of the day. sprinkled a few timesin the forenoon. Ed Tedman staid all night, went away this afternoon. Jenniewent to town with him, quite cool this evening. John McClair here thisafternoon.

 

4 Cool and pleasant all day. went down to the tannery and worked 3/4 ofday on saw frame. came home at 5 P.M. and cut lumber for a wheat bin, went overto McClairs in the evening. Hattie went with me, cool and pleasant thisevening.

 

S Warm and pleasant all day. Made a bin in the morning to put my wheatin. then went down to see Mr. Heath. Came home and went and helped J. Zwemerthrash in the afternoon. the thrashers finished there and set their machine toMcClairs.

 

6 Warm and pleasant a11 day, clouded up some just at night. went overto McClairs and helped thrash in the forenoon, took care of the straw in theafternoon and helped McClair carry part of his wheat upstairs.

 

7 Rained some in the morning. thunder­showers passed around us in theforenoon. rained a little in P. M, with thunder, went and helped Mr. Tiddthrash in the forenoon. Went to McClairs in afternoon to get my wheat but it rainedand I left it. Wrote a school order and went Doanes to get him to sign it, buthe was gone from home.

 

8 Warm and pleasant all day. went down to the tannery and worked a11day for G. P. heath on saw rigging and splitting siding. a little cooler thisevening. Hattie gone to stay with Clara Tidd tonight.

9 Warm and pleasant all day. went to the tannery and worked all day forHeath at sawing and jointing corner boards and siding. Mr. Heath brought me aham 18 lb, 17 oz, and 1 peck of apples. rode home part way with Mr. Doane.

 

10 Warm and pleasant all day. Staid at home all day mostly, went toMcClairs in the morning. to see bout gettingmy wheat home, but McClair was going away so we did not get it over. Jennie gothome tonight.

 

11 Warm and pleasant all day. went to McClairs in the morning andhelped him put his wheat up stairs, then he took his team and brought my wheathome and helped me put it upstairs. ittuckered me out almost and I did not do much in the afternoon, quite coolthis evening.

 

12 Hot and dry, some indications of rain this evening. went to thetannery and worked all day for Heath at his mill work. quite warm this evening.

 

13 Warm and pleasant all day. went to the tannery and worked all dayfor Heath on his mill work. He sent me up my grist of corn and I brought ithome from the tannery. Tedman brought up a yoke of oxen, this morning about 4o'clock and turned into Wallin's lot.

 

14 A little cooler and pleasant all day, went down to the tannery andworked all day for G. P. Heath on mill. He sent up 48# meal by his man who tookit to my house. cool and pleasant this evening.

 

1 S Quite warm and some cloudy in afternoon, went to the tannery andworked all day for G. P. Heath on mill work. His man brought me a can ofkerosene this morning, raining a little this evening.

 

16 More cool and pleasant, went to the tannery and worked all day atdressing and splitting siding. Mrs. Walter Titus here

tonight, quite cool, this evening and pleasant. Worked 5 days for G. P. Heath.

 

17 Pleasant but rather cool in the shade. Mrs. Titus staid all nightand til afternoon. Then we all went over to McClairs and took dinner. Mrs.Newnham, Lizzie and Maria Newnham and Lo Ainsley were there. Mrs. Thus rodehome with Ainsley, a little cool this evening, a little cloudy.

 

18 Quite cool last night and this morning but warm through the day.went to the tannery and worked all day for G. P. Heath on mill work, cool thisevening.

 

19 Warm and pleasant all day, went to the tannery and worked all dayfor Heath on door and window frames. my wife went to town with Mrs. McClair andtook some wheat to the mill, looks like rain.

 

20 Warm and pleasant all day, went down by the tannery and worked allday on Heath's grist mill, putting on cornerboards and making door frames,quite warm.

 

21 Still hot and dry, went to the tannery and worked all day for Heathon grist mill, expected Heath up all day but he did not come. quite warm thisevening.

 

22 Still hot and dry and dusty. went to the tannery and worked all dayfor Heath on his mill. went down town in the evening and got me a new saw, andgot some tomatoes at Taylors and Barkers.

 

23 Some cloudy in the forenoon and looks like rain and very warm. wentto the tannery and worked at roofboarding and shingling just before night. Norain today, Mr. Tidd helped me on the roof.

 

24 Hot and pleasant all day, staid at home the most of the day, wentover to John Zwemers just at night to see if his boy could go and shingle forMr. Heath tomorrow. A hawk made a dive at some of our chickens, I took a gunand shot him.
