Laketown Township, 1873, Day by Day

 

From the 1873 diary of William B. Smalleywho lived in Laketown Township, just north ofSaugatuck. Continued from Page 347.

 

May

I Cold, hardwind in the morning and rained most of the afternoon. staid at home all night.Came to Saugatuck this morning and worked all day for H. D. Moore on hisboarding house [now the Park House B & B]. Went up town in the evening, did notget any paper, misty this evening. Had 3 meals.

 

2 Heavythunderstorms in the night. raining some in the morning. cold wind towardnight, worked all day for H. D. Moore on boarding house. went up town in theevening, got some camphor spirits, turpentine and swat [?] oil. Had 3 meals.

 

3 Rathercool last night, misty this morning but cleared off toward noon, pleasant butcold wind. worked all day for H. D, Moore on boarding house. Got an order of Moore on Burns for 1/2Barlflour. Got some meat and some things and came home. Had 2 meals. Had throughthe week 16 meals. Worked for H. D. M. 6+5=11

 

4 Frozesome last night, warm and pleasant all day. had to cut a little wood in theforenoon. Staid at home all day. John McClair came over here and got Burdett'sgun. The teacher came up just at night. Pleasant this evening. Heard the firstwhippoorwill this evening.

 

5 No frostthis morning, warm and pleasant all day. Came to Saugatuck and worked all dayfor H. D, Moore on boarding house. went up town in the evening and got myTribune. Had 3 meals.

 

6 Warm andpleasant all day. some appearance of rain this evening, wind blowed hard allday. Worked all day for H. D. Moore on fitting blinds on house, did not go uptown this evening. Had 3 meals.

 

7 Warm and windy in the forenoon with afew sprinkles of rain. rained most of the

afternoonbut not very hard. Worked all day for H. D. Moore on fitting blinds and onwalk. Still misty this evening. Had 3 meals.

 

8 Warm andrainy in the forenoon, did not rain in the afternoon worked all day for H. D.Moore on walk for the boarding house Went up town in the evening. went and sawGeorge Smalley. Had 3 meals.

 

9 Warm inforenoon. commenced raining about 11 o'clock rained iii nearly 3 , then beganto rain hard about 4, rained the rest of afternoon & evening. worked allday for H. D. Moore on walk. went up town in evening and engaged 2 bush.potatoes of Burns. had 3 meals.

 

10 Rainedsome in the night and cloudy most of the day. worked all day far H. D. Moore on blinds puttingon the hangings. Sammy went to Saugatuck with a can. I got some kerosene and hecame home. Had 3 meals, worked 5 3/4 days +6+5=16 18 Meals +32=50

 

11 Warm andpleasant all day. Staid at home all day. thawed the syrup out of a barrel Ibought H. D. Moore had about 8 gallons for $3.50. McClair and wife here today.Joseph Ainsley came up and brought the teacher up just at night.

 

12 Cut somewood in the morning, then went to Mooresand worked 3/4 of day putting the hinges on blinds. Got a pair ofboots for myself and pair of shoes for my wife and 2 perforated plasters, twodollars worth of sugar. Frost this morning.

 

13 Pleasantbut cold north wind. Went over to McClairs in the morning and help McClair loga place for potatoes and sweet corn. Came home and stuck up some lumber and cutsome wood. cloudy this evening.

 

14 Sprinkled a little this morningcloudy most of the day. went to McClairs and logged all day. came home andsawed and split some wood. cloudy this evening.

15 A littlecooler and raining a little in the forenoon but cleared off in the afternoon.went over to McClairs and logged 3/4 of day. rode home with Mr.House at night. Hawk caught another chicken this morning.

 

16 Heavyfrost this morning but pleasant and warm all day. went to McClairs and helpedhim log. strained the sinews of my right leg and makes it very painful. Clearand pleasant this evening. Jennies gone to town with the teacher.

 

17 Warm andpleasant all day. Felt quite lame and staid at home all day and cut some wood.Sammy went to town to see the Barge No. 1 launched [O.R. Johnson'sMarinette]. Sammy came home this evening. Jennie not home yet.

 

18 Warm andpleasant. staid at home all day and read Nicholas Nickleby most of the day. Mywife, Sammy and Hattie went over to McClairs. Jennie came back this evening.

 

19 Somecloudy in the night, sat up til 3 1/4 o'clock A.M. and read Nicholas Nickleby.came to Mooresand worked for him putting in blind stops in the boarding house. went up townin the evening and got my Tribune, nothing else. Worked all day for Moore. Had 2 meals atCaseys.

 

20 Drizzlythis morning and part of the forenoon, worked all day and 30 minutes for H. D.Moore putting in window stops in the boarding house. Went up town and engaged abag of meal of Heath, got Sammy and Hattie a pair of shoes at Burns. Misty thisevening, had 3 meals.

 

21 Warm andpleasant al day. worked all day for Mooreon blind stops and walk. Got Moores horse andbuckboard and took some meal home and came back to Moores. had a smart shower this evening. Had3 meals.

 

22 Pleasant and nice this morning.clouded up towards noon with a few sprinkles of rain. worked all day at puttingin blind stops in the brown house of Moores.went up town in the evening and paid Burns $2.25 and death $1.25. Had 3 meals.

 

23 Warm andpleasant today. worked all day putting in blind stops in Moores brown house. Went up town in theevening, got a pair of cotton socks at Burns & Co. Mr. Moore got home thisevening. had 3 meals.

 

24 Warm andpleasant all day, worked all day on walk at the boarding house for H. D. Moore.Sammy came down for some things. I got them at Burns and we came home. found mywife gone to McClairs taking care of his wife. 3 meals. Worked b days & 3hours for Moore16 3/4 + 3/4 + 6 =231/2

 

25 Warm andpleasant all day. My wife came home in forenoon and went back just night. EdTedmon came here this morning. Joseph Ainsley brought the teacher up inafternoon and took tea with us. I took Ainsley's team and took my wife to McClairs.Wallin here to get my wife to go to his house.

 

26 Lowry inmorning and sprinkled a little, cleared off hot before noon and very warm. Cameto Moores andworked all day on walk at the boarding house and fitting and hanging blinds inthe brown house. Had a thundershower in the evening. Ed Tedmon staid all night,came to town and got horse, went back to our house. had 2 meals at Caseys.

 

27 Warm inforenoon but got more cold towards night with a few sprinkles of rain at noon,worked all day fitting and hanging blinds on Moores brown house. went up townin the evening. Saw Burdett and George Smalley. quite cool this evening andpleasant. had 3 meals.

 

28 Quite cool in the morning but hot inthe afternoon. Worked all day at hanging blinds and on porch for H. D., Moore. went up town inthe evening. a little cooler this evening. Had 3 meals.

13 Cool inthe morning, but warm through the day. Worked all day for H. D. Moore on plazafor the boarding house, went up town in the evening, looks some like rain thisevening. Had 3 meals at Caseys. Rained in the night.

 

14 Warm andpleasant all day, Worked 1/2 day for Moore and extra time throughthe week to make up the other 1/2 day, went to see the launch ofBarge No. 2 [O. R. Johnson's Menekaunee] in afternoon. Jenny, Sammy and Hattiecame down to the launch. Got a ride most of the way home with Moore's chore boy.

 

15 Warm andpleasant today. My wife came home last night and staid all night and all day.Sammy and I went over to McClairs in afternoon. Jennie and Hattie not home yetfrom the launch. Still quite warm this evening.

 

16 Warm andpleasant all day. Calve down to Moores in themorning and worked all day for Mooreon his boarding house plaza. Went up town in the evening and saw Burdett andpaid a bill to 0. R. J[ohnson]. & Co and one to Burns. Had 2 meals atCaseys.

 

17 Stillhot and pleasant all day. Worked all day for H. D. Moore on plaza to theboarding house. Moore sent his team and took me, and some flour and meal homefor me.. Found no one at home, came back in the evening. Had 3 meals at Caseys.

 

18 Hot dryand pleasant all day. Worked all day for H. D. Moore on plaza to the boardinghouse. went up town in the evening and took one of my cloth boots to SamuelGoshorns to be mended, then went over to see Burdett. Had 3 meals.

 

19 Very hot and windy. worked all dayon H. D. Moore's plaza to the boarding house. Went up town in the evening sawthe new church and got my boot at Goshorns shop. Went to A. H. Brink & Co.and paid him $3.

 

20 Notquite so hot today, but dry and pleasant. worked all day for H. D. Moore onplaza to his boarding house. Quite cool this evening, went up town in theevening. had 3 meals at Caseys.

 

21 Very warmtoday, worked 1/2 day for H. D. Moore on boarding house. Went up town afternoonand then got some syrup at Mooresand came home.

 

22 Veryvery warm all day, warmest day, I think, we have had. Staid at home all day andhardly got out of the house. No one here but George McClair in the morning andthe teaching came with Lucy Tidd in the evening.

 

23 Verywarm all night and all day. Some cloudy and a few sprinkles of rain. Thundershowers pressed around us in the evening. Cut some wood in A. M., thought itwas going to rain, so I did not go to Mooresto work today, warn this evening.

 

24 Verywarm except about an hour just before noon when a thick fog came over us. Cameto Moores andworked all day on boarding house and fence, went up town in the evening and gotmy Tribune Had 2 meals at Caseys.

 

2 5 Anothervery warm day with a few sprinkles of rain. worked all day on pickets for fencein front of the boarding house for H. D. Moore. Went over to M. B. Williams inthe evening to see if l could get some strawberries. Had 3 meals at Caseys.

 

26 Warmtoday, went over to M. B. Williams in the morning with Moores horse and buckboard and got a crate ofstrawberries. Got some sugar and washboard at Burns and came home, then tookhis horse and wagon home.
