LOCAL GOLF COURSES OF TODAY AND YESTERDAY
REVISITED AT OCT. 14 HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING

Area golf enthusiasm during the 1920s sparked a
number of miniature courses such as this green
on the front lawn of Saugatuck's Butler Hotel.

0CT. 2, 2009 -- A nostalgic look at golf courses that have drawn visitors from near and far to the Saugatuck-Douglas area, including some links that live on only in memory, will highlight the Saugatuck-Douglas Historical Society meeting Wednesday, October 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Old School House Discovery Center, 130 Center Street, Douglas. Admission is free and public attendance is invited.

The presentation, by retired local newspaper editor and dauntless duffer Art Lane, will reveal why our area is blessed with a bounty of courses, recalling how West Shore, Clearbrook and Ravines came to be.

Lane also will revisit some all-but-forgotten courses that were popular a century ago. Audience participation is welcomed to enliven the discussion with questions, memories and old photographs of our early days of golf. Refreshments and free (used) golf balls will be available.
